Bernadine Silberman creates sculpture which is powerfully conceived and beautifully
executed. Her technique of direct carving in stone is a synthesis of ancient craft and
modern technology. The artist sculpts with hammer and chisel to reveal an inner softness,
a vein of color, a jagged plane producing artworks as timeless as the earth itself. The
end result is a symphony of natural beauty and creative spirit. "I try to
collaborate with the stone, striving to achieve the ideal form. The shapes are suggestive
and evocative, challenging the viewer to become involved. I seldom start with
a firm idea...that would be too restrictive. I let the stone spur my creativity, drawing
energy from the form as it takes shape in my hands."
